History

The Koepelgevangenis was built between 1899 and 1901 by the architect Willem Cornelis Metzelaar.

What makes the Dome unique is its location in the heart of a residential area. Whilst prisons were often situated on the outskirts of towns, this striking building has instead become a recognisable icon of Haarlem and an integral part of everyday city life.

Architecture

Architecturally, the prison stands out for its enormous round dome, almost 38 metres high, and its symmetrical layout featuring multiple galleries lined with cells. The building was designed according to the so-called panopticon principle, devised by the English philosopher Jeremy Bentham. In this design, all the cells are arranged in a circle around a central watchtower, so that prisoners could be constantly monitored.

From then to now

The prison remained in use for over a hundred years and finally closed its doors in 2016. The complex was then repurposed as a cultural and educational venue. Today, De Koepel houses, among other things, classrooms, offices, catering facilities and a cinema.
